A very warm welcome to the new year, an exciting one for Swiss News as we enter into our 30th year
of publication.
You can say as much: we live in interesting times. Our century may still be young, but it has already witnessed great natural disasters, political upheaval and the most severe economic downturn since the Great Depression. Much uncertainty still remains, but there now is a sense of hope in the air; a promise of a new era.
In this spirit of optimism, the 2012 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos will bring together members of the world elite under the topic of Great transformation: Shaping New Models this January. As one of few magazines present at this event, Swiss News starts the new year with an increased focus on business. We speak to the Secretary General of the IFRC, Bekele Geleta, about the significance of the WEF and some of the greatest challenges faced by decision-makers across the globe today. In our special report on entrepreneurship, we follow the path of change-makers with Ernst & Young Switzerland’s CEO, Bruno Chiomento, and hear how entrepreneurs form the backbone of economic recovery. We later learn about the challenges of entrepreneurship first hand from the Swiss king of silk, Andi Stutz, the roboticist, Nicola Tomatis, and cosmetics specialist, Nicolas Chenot.
Our February People section features a profile of our new Swiss president, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, and is otherwise dedicated to two great entertainers: Swiss-based, British musician Phil Collins and the legendary Emil Steinberger, who after 30 years, graces our cover once again. Far away from the limelight, our Travel section ventures into the Swiss mountains, first exploring the nooks and crannies of Zermatt and later discovering Mürren’s British connection with local legend Böbs. In Lifestyle, we bring you the surprisingly colourful creations of Swiss fashion label, Little Black Dress, a portrait of Lee McConnell, a British hairdresser creating cutting edge styles in Zurich, and Tsitaliya’s changing room, an exciting new column featuring the latest fashion trends.
We start into our 30th year of publication with great excitement and hope that it will be a happy and memorable year for all of us!
All the best,
Carina Scheuringer, Editor
